Sermon - YIKES!

Okay, well, I'm taking a break from working on my sermon for this Sunday (March 5th). I feel like I might have taken on too big of a topic, but I think once I start practicing it, I will feel better.

Anyway, I'm talking about the Law and the Gospel. So, please be praying for me that I'll communicate in such a way as to cause comfort to the despairing and truth for the "pharisees" so that both will walk away with a greater view of the Gospel!

Also, pray for me that I'll be gripped by the Gospel through this study.

Hey PT2,

What did you mean by comfort? If you are talking about something that needs to be heard and is a sin, why comfort? I didn't understand that, i was thinking kindof of speeding. No comfort. Speeding is a sin since God provided the law, etc... Just wandering...

I think that means you should stop speeding as well.:)

I mean that the despairing already know that they shouldn't do it. So, they need comfort in the forgiveness offered to them in the gospel.

Hi: Psalm 23:4 states.... "Your rod and your staff, they comfort me."
The shepherd's club and crook are viewed as comforting intruments of protection and direction.(from MacArthur) We need God's direction-sometimes it may sting - so we can see to go the right way.
And the truth hurts first then it is comforting. I need our Shepherd who desires to keeps me from going astray. Thanks - Barb

QUESTION ABOUT SERMON

First off, You did an excellent Job. It was incredible. That orange *anology* was awesome.

But how do you know God the Father enjoyed killing Jesus? That stood out to me. As far as I know now,I don't think God said that. I don't think He wanted to allow us to Kill Jesus and have Him pour his wrath. Wouldn't it of hurt Him very much. Jesus didn't want to die, he even asked His' Father if there was another way.

What about in the Passion, for example. When a 'Raindrop' falls from the sky when Jesus just died. It represents a tear drop from God, our Father.

Would you say that part of the movie is based on wrong doctine?

I know the movie has some stuff that you can tell if Catholic but...ya, so please write back...

Hey Justin: I agree and I told PT that the orange example was very cool. In regards to your question - I refer you to Isaiah 53:10 "the LORD was pleased to bruise Him(Christ), He has put Him to grief.. when he makes himself an offspring, He shall prolong his days; the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand." John Piper (a favorite author) in his book The Pleasures of God, asks a question and then answers it: "Why did God bruise his Son and bring him to grief? He did it to resolve the dissonance between his love for his glory and his love for sinners."
What do you all think?
See you at the TNT tonight - you may be put on the "nice" spot.
I also agree with you, there are a number of catholic myths in the passion. (I grew up catholic)

Well, I think that pretty much answers my quetion. It makes me sad but at the same time I'm so thankful for Christ...anyways, i got to go...

hey, can the gospel and the law live with or without each other?

PT2 said...

There can be no gospel without the law. But there could be LAW without the gospel. If that were the case, we'd be in bondage forever and have NO hope whatsoever.

Anonymous said...

if the gospel is the law, then how come we are told not to live in the law?

Anonymous,

The gospel is NOT the law. But you need to have the law in order to move towards the gospel.

In other words, if you realize that you are a sinner that has no hope, you will appreciate the fact that God sent Jesus to die for sinners. But if you just believe that Jesus died for you, you have no idea really why and what you need to be saved from.

So, the gospel is NOT the law....
